What are the treatments available?
“There are actually a lot of treatments available for ED, and with The Doctor Service, we provide most of the them. The main treatment that people use is called a PDE5 Inhibitor, and you’ve probably never heard of that. The more common way that you’ve heard of that is through a drug called Viagra.
Viagra comes as a branded version of the PDE5 Inhibitor, and the other word for it is Sildenafil. Sildenafil is the unbranded version of viagra.
Viagra was the first one available on prescription. These medications help increase the blood flow by opening up the blood vessel to the penis, and they work for different periods of time.
For example, Sildenafil, or Viagra which are the most commonly used, start working 30-60 minutes after taking the tablet, and can work between 4-6 hours. They come in a range of doses: 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. So if you’ve not taken any medication before, I recommend you should start on a lower dose, and if it’s partially effective, then you can always try higher doses.
If you’re using a different medication called, Tadalafil (the branded name for this is Cialis), this has slightly different properties to Sildenafil. The main difference is that Tadalafil can last up to 36 hours. So it is better for some people who are having sex more frequently – over a period of a couple of days for example.
People worry about these tablets – Tadalafil. ’36 hours? Am I going to have an erection for 36 hours!?’
No, the answer is no! You need to be sexually aroused for the medication to work. For example, if you take Sildenafil, and you are going to have sex in 2 hours time, you need to be aroused for the medication to work. So you won’t suddenly have an erection.
In fact, it would be a medical emergency if you were to have a persistent erection for more than 4 hours. That, I’ve never seen in my medical practice, and is extremely rare, as it happens less than 1 out of 1000 people. But of course, if that did happened to you, then you would have to go see the emergency department.
What are the side effects?
They also some side effects that people tend to get it quite often. Mild headache is one of the commonest and it tends to happen in around 1 in 10 people. Another side effect is a mild runny nose. This occurs because the medication opens up blood vessels. And when you get a runny nose, it’s because the blood vessels are open. Check out our website for other less common side effects
There is other medication that we also provide at The Doctor Service including Spedra. You can remember Spedra as ‘speed’. That is because this medication works quicker than the others. So it starts working from 15 minutes. It lasts the same time as Sildenafil (4-6 hours).
Cialis daily is a much lower dose, but you take it everyday. This is more suitable for people that will be having sex more often (3-4 times a week). Usually people take Cialis Daily when they are having sex frequently, so they don’t have to plan ahead to take the medication earlier.
