  • Hair Growth
Helps to promote further hair growth in men with mild to moderate hair loss caused by Male Pattern Balding

  • Hair Loss Prevention
Studies show it to be up to 88% effective. There is a chance that it might not be effective. It is less likely to be effective in men with very significant hair loss, or for men who have different causes of hair loss.

  • How it Works
Blocks the conversion of testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which has been found to be the main cause of hair loss.

  • Common side effects (more than 1 in 100)
Some people get side effects, but most people will not get side effects. Common side effects (more than 1 in 100 chance) include reduced sex drive, difficulty maintaining an erection, reduction in semen produced or ejaculation problems. Some people may experience a drop in blood pressure when standing, which is more likely to occur if you are taking other blood pressure medications.

  • Rare Side Effects (less than 1 in 100)
Rarely (Less than 1 in 100) some men can develop sore, swollen or tender breasts. If this occurs you should stop the medication and speak to a health professional for further advice.

  • Other Side Effects (frequency unknown)
Rarely some people report episodes of rash or allergic reaction. Recently there have been reports of some men experiencing thoughts of low mood and self-harm, but these appear to be rare. Some patients found they have painful testicles, palpitations or changes in the way the liver works. If any of these occur you should stop the medication and speak to a health professional for further advice.

  • Contraception
It is important to use contraception when taking finasteride such as condoms, as it is excreted in semen, and could theoretically increase the risk of congenital defects of a baby conceived during use of Finasteride. Women should not handle the tablets.

  • Allergy
You should stop using this medication if you develop signs of a serious allergy. Symptoms include swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue or difficulty breathing. Other symptoms may include diarrhoea, cramps, severe burning, peeling of skin or itching. You should seek medical attention from a health professional as soon as possible. This is a precautionary message for people taking any new medicine.

Hair Loss

The most common cause of hair loss in men is Male Pattern Baldness (MPB), also known by the medical term Androgenic Alopecia. There are different ways to manage MPB of which Finasteride - the brand name is Propecia - are the most effective tablet treatment options. A prescription is required from a doctor if you want to use the medication.

Male Pattern Balding

You can read full information about male pattern balding on The Doctor Service Blog

30% of men by 30 years are affected. The process of hair loss can start at any age after puberty, and the rate of progression changes significantly between men.

It occurs naturally, and is more likely to happen if other members of your family are affected as it is hereditary. MPB is diagnosed by its typical pattern of hair loss. Hair loss usually starts at the temples, where the hair line recedes, followed by progressive hair loss at the crown.

There are other types of hair loss, and it is important that you are sure that you are not experiencing these types of hair loss, as the medication recommended by The Doctor Service will not work for these types of hair loss.

If you're not sure what's causing your hair loss you should not use this service and get further advice from a health professional.

Treatments Available with The Doctor Service

There are effective treatments and the hair loss process can potentially be stopped or reversed.

Hair that has been lost can also be regained to varying degrees. There are two main treatments, Finasteride (the branded version known as Propecia) and Regaine (the branded version also known as  Minoxidil).

The most effective treatment for MPB is Finasteride and is taken once a day. Studies have shown up to an 88% response to Finasteride.

Men will usually start to see significant improvement from 3-6 months, but the best results are usually seen after 12 months of treatment. There are varying effects between individuals however. Some men have a very good response to the medication, whereas others may only have a small improvement.

If you have near complete hair loss, or have lost hair some time ago then the treatment may be less effective for you. Finasteride can have side effects in some people.

If the treatment is stopped then men will usually start to notice hair loss again within 6-12 months, sometimes earlier.

Contraception
It is important to use contraception when taking finasteride such as condoms, as it is excreted in semen, and could increase the risk of congenital defects of a baby conceived when taking finasteride. Women should not handle the tablets.
Alternative Treatments
Minoxidil is available as a lotion or foam that is rubbed on your scalp daily. It works by improving blood flow to the scalp and promoting hair growth. Although not as effective as Finasteride, it has been shown to work in up to 60% if cases.

Regaine contains either 5% or 2% Minoxidil. There is a potential of skin irritation or headaches, but these do not happen often.

Minoxidil usually needs to be used for at least 3-4 months before significant effects are seen. The balding process will resume once Regaine is stopped, and any new hair usually falls out 2 months after treatment is stopped.

You are able to use both treatments safely together which often leads to best results. The most effective hair growth with both treatments is expected at 12 months. We suggest a trial of 3-6 months to assess the response before ordering further medication. You can order Finasteride or Minoxidil from The Doctor Service or Minoxidil is also available directly from Chemist.net if you choose not to order finasteride.
