Seasonal Allergies & Hay Fever

There are medications available from the pharmacy to help treat allergy symptoms, but sometimes they have side effects or they are not effective enough.

Fexofenadine is an alternative that is on prescription only. It is safe to use and large studies have shown it to be more effective than other anti-histamines.

Preventing Hay Fever
It is difficult to prevent hay fever from occurring as going outside is part of daily life, so it is difficult to prevent exposure to the allergens (e.g. pollens) as they are present in the air.

Taking a regular antihistamine tablet such as fexofenadine, is a common way to help prevent or reduce symptoms.
Treatment Options
Anti-histamines are the mainstay for managing hay fever. There are sedating antihistamines, which tend to have side effects of making people feel drowsy, and newer non-sedating antihistamines such as cetirizine and loratadine which cause less drowsiness.

Fexofenadine has been found to have a better effect in many people compared to loratadine and cetirizine.

Fexofenadine is the generic name of the medication, but the original brand is known as Telfast. With The Doctor Service we are able to offer either the brand version or the non-branded version.

Other ways to manage hay fever include:

- Anti-allergy eye drops which work to reduce symptoms of redness, soreness and itching.
- Steroid nasal sprays work directly on symptoms just around the nose.

The best treatments for hay fever will vary from person to person so it is about finding what works best for you. Many people will use a combination of sprays, eye drops and tablets if their symptoms are particularly bad.
